NJ couple awarded $7.5 million in mesothelioma settlement

It has been reported that a New Jersey couple has been awarded $7.5 million in the settlement of a mesothelioma lawsuit. The wife developed mesothelioma cancer from secondhand asbestos exposure. Primary asbestos exposure occurs when a person works directly with asbestos containing products. Secondhand asbestos exposure occurs when a person becomes exposed to asbestos from a person who has been directly exposed.

The wife experienced asbestos exposure while washing her husband's asbestos contaminated work clothes. The husband worked with asbestos containing products for over 30 years. Mesothelioma claims about 3,000 lives each year in the U.S. The cancer could have been avoided if asbestos industry companies had warned about the dangers of asbestos or provided equipment such as respirators to prevent asbestos exposure.
