Asbestos contamination forces library shut down

The Orange Public Library in Orange, New Jersey is currently closed due to the discovery of asbestos in the building. The library is a historical landmark and holds over 150,000 books. The presence of asbestos was discovered by an employee and then confirmed by an investigation. Authorities initially required the library to hire licensed asbestos abatement contractors by March to remove the asbestos. When the library failed to meet this deadline, it was granted an extension to June. The library still failed to meet the June deadline and as a result, the director was suspended.

Malignant mesothelioma is the most severe form of asbestos cancer. When it develops in the lungs, it is known as pleural mesothelioma. When it develops in the abdomnal cavity, it is known as peritoneal mesothelioma. There is no cure for mesothelioma cancer. However, there are mesothelioma treatment techniques that can be effective for some patients. One such mesothelioma treatment technique is photodynamic therapy (PDT). This treatment technique uses light to kill targeted mesothelioma cancer cells. PDT is not effective for tumors that are too large or cancers that have spread too far.
